Our People Our Place, 2019 – an Horizon Festival commission
Our People Our Place, 2019
Our People Our Place, 2019, commissioned by Horizon Festival, Sunshine Coast City Council, is a large-scale photographic projection work that showcases and celebrates the rich diversity of the Sunshine Coast region.
Combining portraiture, projection and sound, Our People Our Place tells the story of 32 people from across the Sunshine Coast, of all ages, backgrounds, genders and abilities. Showcasing a refreshing honesty and intimacy, this project shares stories of pursuits of self-discovery and devotion to serving our community, both from those who grew up here, and those who chose to make the Sunshine Coast their home.
We all have a unique story to tell, and through these collaborations, I explored how individual stories can be shared to deconstruct ideas of gender and race within the Australian context.
Across a three week residency, I meet with an array of incredible humans! Hearing stories, dreams and hopes. Learning about cultures and history and what connects us. Laughing and yarning. Making portraits and recording stories. The collective stories became short vignettes of our collaborations, offered to the public as large projections on stacked shipping containers (Festival Hub Maroochydore) and mapped into an old Ambulance building (Nambour).
